John C. Nulsen, M.D.

Dr_John_NulsenDirector and a lead physician at The Center for Advanced Reproductive Services, Dr. Nulsen is Board Certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility. He has specialized in Reproductive Endocrinology since 1987 and has been Director of The Center’s IVF Program since 1990. Dr. Nulsen founded and is the Director of The Center’s Donor Egg Program, which was responsible for the first successful donor egg conception in New England in 1987.

He graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1980 and completed his residency and fellowship training as well as a year of research in reproductive biology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Nulsen has been selected annually since 2004 by the Consumers’ Research Council in America to be included in their annual “Editions of the Guide to America’s Top Obstetricians and Gynecologists.”  Additionally, he has been selected annually by Best Doctors as one of “America’s Best Doctors” since 2007. Dr. Nulsen has been selected by Connecticut Magazine’s “Top Doctors for Women” in 2006 and 2009. Additionally, he was selected by Hartford Magazine as one of Greater Hartford’s Top Docs in 2007 through 2009,  one of Connecticut Magazine’s “Top Doctors for Women,” and as one of “America’s Top Obstetricians and Gynecologists” in 2004-2005.

In addition to being a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Chief of Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility as the UCONN Health Center, Dr. Nulsen is involved in all aspects of fertility treatments with special interests in endoscopic surgery, ovulation induction, IVF and egg donation. Dr. Nulsen continues to be actively involved in clinical research in reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

Claudio Benadiva, M.D., H.C.L.D.

Dr. Claudio Benadiva is the Director of the IVF Laboratory at The Center for Advanced Reproductive Services at the University of Connecticut. In addition to being a Clinical Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Connecticut, he is a Fellow of the American College of Ob/Gyn, and is Board Certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

Dr. Benadiva is among the very few physicians who are certified by the American Board of Bioanalysis as a high complexity laboratory director, making him uniquely suited to integrate both clinical and laboratory protocols in an IVF program. He has been awarded “Best Doctor in America” every year since 2001. In 2004, Dr. Benadiva received the prestigious “Family Building Award” from the American Fertility Association and was selected by The Consumers’ Research Council in America to be included in their 2004–05 and 2008-09 editions of the Guide to America’s Top Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He has been awarded “Top Docs for Women” by Connecticut Magazine, and “Greater Hartford’s Top Docs” by Hartford Magazine every year since 2004. More recently, he has received the ASRM 2012 Star Award, presented at the ASRM 68th Annual Meeting, San Diego, CA.

Dr. Benadiva graduated from the University of Buenos Aires in 1981 and completed his residency in Ob/Gyn at the University of Connecticut Health Center. He completed fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Benadiva has done extensive research in Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology since 1986. He continues to lecture nationally and internationally, with a special interest in ovulation induction for IVF, PGD, and methods for prevention of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.

David Schmidt, M.D.

A lead physician at The Center for Advanced Reproductive Services, Dr. Schmidt is board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility (REI). He has specialized in Reproductive Endocrinology since 2001.

Dr. Schmidt is a well-established and distinguished member of the University of Connecticut Health Center community.

He graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in 1997 and completed his Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at the UCONN Health Center where he highlighted his final year as being the recipient of several awards for outstanding clinical and teaching skills. Dr. Schmidt completed a three year REI fellowship at The University of Connecticut Health Center at The Center for Advanced Reproductive Services. During this time, Dr. Schmidt distinguished himself as an accomplished and compassionate clinician, leader among his peers, and dedicated academic.

In addition to being an Assistant Clinical Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Connecticut Health Center, Dr. Schmidt has special interests in IVF, ovulation induction, endoscopic surgery and research. Several of Dr. Schmidt’s research projects have been accepted for national publication or presentation. He has also been awarded the Dorfman Award for Excellence in Patient Care, the Alumni Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, and the Dr. Spero Neckles Award for Outstanding Resident Research.

Lawrence Engmann, M.D., M.R.C.O.G

A lead physician at The Center for Advanced Reproductive Services, Dr. Engmann is board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility (REI). He has specialized in REI since 1998.

Dr. Engmann is a well-established and respected member of the University of Connecticut Health Center community.

He graduated from the University of Ghana Medical School and received his MRCOG in 1995 from the United Kingdom. He then went on to complete a reproductive medicine fellowship in 1998 in the U.K. Upon relocating to the U.S., Dr. Engmann completed a residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the UCONN Health Center in 2003. Dr. Engmann completed a three year REI fellowship at The UCONN Health Center at The Center for Advanced Reproductive Services. During this time, Dr. Engmann distinguished himself as an accomplished and compassionate clinician, leader among his peers, and dedicated academic.

In addition to being a Clinical Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the UCONN Health Center, Dr. Engmann has special interests in ovulation induction, assisted reproductive technologies (IVF), endoscopic surgery, oncofertility and research. He has published many peer-reviewed articles and abstracts and lectured at many national and international meetings.

He has been selected by Consumer’s Research Council in America to be included in their 2009 Edition of Guide to America’s Top Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He has also been awarded The Berlex Foundation Resident Education Award, the Best Maternal-Fetal Medicine Resident Award, the Alumni Award for Undergraduate Education and The Ludwig Pyrtec Award for Best Scientific Paper. He is also a Clinical Research/Reproductive Endocrinology Scientist Scholar, National Institute of Health (2008-2009).

Andrea J. DiLuigi, M.D.

A lead physician at The Center for Advanced Reproductive Services, Dr. DiLuigi is board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology and in Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility (REI). She has specialized in REI since 2004.

Dr. DiLuigi received her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1998 and completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Women & Infants Hospital/ Brown University in 2002.

During her training, Dr. DiLuigi was the recipient of numerous teaching awards, honors, and academic achievement awards. After completing her residency, Dr. DiLuigi worked as an Attending Physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology with a private practice in Rhode Island. She also continued to pursue her passion for teaching residents and medical students at Women & Infants Hospital and the Brown University School of Medicine.

Dr. DiLuigi completed a three year REI fellowship at the University of Connecticut Health Center at The Center for Advanced Reproductive Services. During this time, she distinguished herself as a caring, compassionate, and knowledgeable clinician as well as a dedicated academic.

Dr. DiLuigi is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ob/Gyn at the UCONN Health Center. She has published numerous articles and presented her research at several national meetings. Her special interests include IVF, ovulation induction, egg donation, and polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Anthony Luciano, M.D.

Dr. Anthony Luciano is a part- time lead physician and Director of Endoscopic Surgery at the Center for Advanced Reproductive Services. In addition to being a Full Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the UCONN Medical School, he is a Fellow of the American College of Ob/Gyn, and is Board Certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.

Dr. Luciano provides patient care as part of UCONN Health and the Center for Advanced Reproductive Services. His practice at UCONN Health focuses on all aspects of women’s health and surgical care as well as preliminary infertility diagnoses and treatments. At the Center, Dr. Luciano provides all aspects of advanced reproductive technology and in­ vitro fertilization. He is also the Director of Endoscopic Surgery responsible for best surgical practices and education and leadership to surgical providers, fellows, residents and medical students assigned to the Center.

Dr. Luciano graduated from the University of Connecticut Medical School. He then went on to complete an Internship at Hartford Hospital. He then returned to UCONN to completed his ObGyn residency and REI Fellowship.

Dr. Luciano has done extensive research in Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology and is recognized internationally for his work with invasive gyn surgical techniques. He is co­author of a major surgical textbook, Operative Gynecologic Laparoscopy: Principles and Techniques, and a reviewer and editor for numerous professional journals. He is a past president of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) and the Society of Reproductive Surgeons (SRS). Dr. Luciano is the recipient of national and international recognition for his surgical work and research and has received numerous awards for patient care. He continues to lecture nationally and internationally.

Mary Casey Jacob, Ph.D.

Dr. Mary Casey Jacob is a highly trained external resource, providing education and counseling services to patients at The Center for Advanced Reproductive Services. Education about the psychosocial and ethical aspects of treatment choices is an important part of helping patients give true informed consent for treatments. The mind-body cognitive-behavioral counseling Dr. Jacob offers is intended to help patients understand and cope with the stresses of infertility and better deal with emotional and ethical issues that can be encountered. Specific treatment for conditions such as needle phobias is also available. She is also a resource for locating similar therapists in your geographic area.

Mary Casey Jacob received her Ph.D. in psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and then completed a Health Psychology Internship at Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Haven, CT.

She is a Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.

In addition to her work with infertility patients, Dr. Jacob has expertise in chronic pain management, coping with symptoms of PMS and menopause, and smoking cessation.

As a nurse practitioner, Marie is able to provide direct patient care and perform fertility testing procedures, working alongside the medical staff. She also provides guidance and support to the nursing staff. Marie has over thirty years of nursing experience, including more than 15 years as a nurse practitioner. She graduated as valedictorian with a diploma in nursing from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a master’s degree in biology from Central Connecticut State University, and a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Connecticut. Marie is board certified as an adult nurse practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and as a reproductive endocrinology and infertility nurse by the Nurse’s Certification Corporation. She was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau, the international nursing honor society, and is a member of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health and Connecticut APRNs.

Marie has worked in the field of reproductive endocrinology since 1993 in the roles of RN, research coordinator and APRN. She has also been a sub-investigator in multiple clinical trials in the field of women’s health. Marie’s interests include the use of integrative modalities to support the medical treatments used in the process of family building.

Deb has more than 30 years of nursing experience working in women’s healthcare. At the Center, she provides care directly to patients, performs fertility testing procedures alongside the medical staff, and guides the nursing staff.

Deb graduated with a diploma in nursing from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Saint Joseph College, and a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Connecticut. She was also inducted into Sigma Theta Tau, the international nursing honor society and is a Member of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health and Connecticut APRNs.

Deb is board certified as an Adult Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurse’s Credentialing Center.
